Paint, GRP and composite work protect the yacht and influence resale value. Gelcoat cracks, osmosis signs, dulling, impact damage or old antifouling layers are not fixed by “painting over” without proper preparation. At Sound Yachts in Yalıkavak Marina we run a controlled process from survey and masking through primer to topcoat.
Typical steps: surface diagnosis (gelcoat, laminate, blistering); define sanding/removal depth; osmosis open-dry-repair when required; primers and fillers; system and colour choice; controlled application and cure; final inspection. Antifouling choice depends on previous coats and cruising area. On topsides, UV resistance and gloss retention matter most.
Paint/composite work is due when crack networks spread, moisture uptake is suspected, deep scratches appear, colour fades or antifouling thickness builds season after season. Early action limits moisture progress into the laminate. Jeanneau, Contest, Saxdor and Bali hulls differ in gelcoat and laminate build; brand knowledge helps set the right repair depth.
Proximity to haul-out areas helps manage dust control and curing windows. Schedules follow weather; rushing cure raises visible defects and early failure risk. Quality means even surfaces, clean edge work, compatible systems and clear wash/care notes for the owner.
Colour changes or partial refinish projects lock masking lines before work starts. Quotes state scope clearly—underwater only, topsides or full refinish. When paint coincides with osmosis or mechanical access, one plan reduces repeated staging costs.
Dust control and masking quality during preparation matter as much as the topcoat. Poor sanding or dirty substrate causes early adhesion loss. Colour matching considers light and ageing of surrounding paint; catalogue colour and on-yacht result are not always identical, so a test patch may be advised on critical areas.
Antifouling choice depends on speed profile, time in marina and chemistry of previous coats. The wrong product peels or protects poorly. Above the waterline, UV-capable systems plus wash/protectant care keep gloss. In composite repairs, laminate integrity comes before cosmetics.
